Meditation - The Importance of Meditation Furniture

By Radhakrishnan K Gurudas

Meditation typically requires one to sit in a stationary position so that the focus of the mind shifts from the activities of the body to itself. While sitting cross legged on the floor is probably the most common position to meditate, not everyone is capable of or suited to meditating in this position especially if a person suffers from back aches or is prone to suffer from cramps.

If one is not comfortable in a particular position while meditating then the whole purpose of meditating is lost.

It is precisely for this reason that meditation furniture’s were first designed. Some of the different types of meditation furniture’s are cushions, adjustable chairs, tables and benches. These come in a verity of shapes, sizes and colors and are not very plain or formal to look at. A typical example is the Seagrass Harmony Loveseat which can double up as a favorite chair for your late-movie marathons. And you thought meditation furniture is boring?

Some meditation furniture, particularly meditation chairs are tilted at an angle in order to mold the shape of the back and prevent slouching during the meditation sessions. Easels are also available which can be used to prop up books and script guides while meditating.

A Meditation cushion may resemble the bean bag in your family room, but there are reasons for using these during meditation. These cushions and benches encourage the “relaxation response”. Different people have different body structures and that is why it is important to find a sitting position that will work best for you. Some people change their positions as well as their sitting furniture to achieve a more relaxed posture.

There are many online sites that offer a variety of their meditation furniture like the cushions for sampling first so that you can pick the one that suits you the best. You can send it back if it does not suit you. A good site to visit is www.zafu.net, they show different meditation positions and the possible sitting tools to use them in. It even has the inflatable zafu which is the smallest meditation furniture. It is specially designed for travel as it weighs only six ounces and is no bigger than a paperback novel when deflated!

Cushions and zafus with buckwheat hull are perfect for people who prefer using bean bags while meditating. The buckwheat conforms to one’s shape in addition to providing a firm seat.

Gone are the days when meditation meant sitting on the floor in uncomfortable positions. The first step in meditation should be about finding a sitting or lying down position that relaxes the body. And if relaxing the body means using of comfortable furniture, then that is the way to go about meditation.
